What is a Macchiato?

A macchiato is an Italian coffee drink with a high coffee-to-milk ratio. Traditional macchiatos are made with two parts espresso and two parts foamed milk. In the US, macchiatos are typically made with one part espresso and one part milk.

Starbucks uses a different ratio for macchiatos, with one part espresso and two, three, or even four parts milk, topped with a sweet syrup. This is closer to a latte in Italy.

Ingredients

Ingredients used in making the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Oat milk has a subtle nutty flavor that complements the warm flavors of this drink. I like to use Plant Oat for their extra creamy texture.
  • Blonde espresso roast is a lighter and smoother blend of coffee beans than Starbucks’ Pike Roast blend. It gives the macchiato a more delicate flavor profile.
  • Syrup: I use Monin Cinnamon Bun syrup, which I bought on Amazon. It tastes very similar to Starbucks’ apple syrup, and I think they might even use Monin themselves.
  • Note: After testing many recipes and analyzing Starbucks’ ingredient list, I noticed that “apple” was missing from the syrup ingredients. In fact, the syrup is mostly sugar and brown sugar. The apple flavor comes from the drizzle on top. After making homemade syrup and testing different flavors, I found that Monin Cinnamon Bun tasted the most like Starbucks’ syrup.
