Your Blackberry Sage Questions Answered

What is the Blackberry Sage Refresher?

A Blackberry Sage Refresher is an iced drink at Starbucks. The drink starts with Blackberry sage base and then it is shaken with ice and mixed with water, lemonade, or coconut milk. The three versions are:

  • Blackberry Sage Refresher: mixed with water
  • Blackberry Sage Lemonade: mixed with lemonade
  • Blackberry Midnight Drink: mixed with coconut milk

What Does the Blackberry Sage Refresher Taste Like?

The Blackberry Sage Refresher is fruity with a light herb flavor on the finish. The lemonade version is more tart, while the coconut version is creamy and reminds me of a berry cream saver candy.

Is The Blackberry Sage Refresher Caffeinated?

The Blackberry Sage Refresher at Starbucks has caffeine in its base and cannot be ordered caffeine free. My recipe gives you the option to add caffeine.

What is the Starbucks Midnight Drink?

The Starbucks Midnight Drink mixes the Blackberry Sage base with coconut milk, creating a tropical creamy drink.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • You can make this drink with two ingredients in less than two minutes!
  • A bottle of blackberry sage syrup yields 21 grande-sized servings. That is about 35 cents per serving!
  • Depending on the mixer, each iced refresher should cost between 50 and 75 cents! That is roughly a savings of $5.50 for a grande drink.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients used in making the recipe (Blackberry sage syrup, freeze-dried blackberries, and green coffee extract).

Blackberry and Sage Syrup

Starbucks Blackberry Sage Syrup is proprietary and not available for sale. This recipe uses Blackberry and Sage Syrup to recreate Starbucks flavor. The syrup includes citric acid, which is in the Starbucks base and saves you from buying an additional ingredient. The bottle has enough syrup for 28 grande drinks.

Note: You cannot recreate the Starbucks syrups using simple syrup, blackberries and sage. That is because Starbucks uses artificial flavors to create its drinks and not real fruit.

Freeze-Dried Blackberries

Freeze-dried blackberries are a fun inclusion and make the drink similar to Starbucks. If you want to cut costs, I recommend cutting these. They make the drink fun but add very little flavor. At our house, I substitute fresh blackberries.

Green Coffee Extract

The drink at Blackberry Sage Refresher contains green coffee extract in its base. This is why you cannot order it caffeine free. If you want caffeine you can add it. Personally, I prefer this drink without it.

Stevia Extract (Not included)

Starbucks lists Stevia as an ingredient in their blackberry refreshers. While I was testing the drink, I could not taste the Stevia. For that reason I left it out of my recipe.

Tips for the Best Blackberry Sage Refresher

Coconut Milk

You want to use coconut milk you find in the dairy section. Canned coconut milk is used for cooking and will not taste like the Starbucks version.

Shake with Ice

To recreate the Starbucks flavor, you have to shake the drink with ice. (Shaken not stirred). I shake it in a mason jar with it’s lid on.
