2tablespoonssoy sauce or vegan Worcestershire sauce
1tablespoonbrown sugar
1tablespoonDijon mustard
1teaspoonchile powder
½teaspoonsmoked paprika
salt and pepper to taste
4hamburger buns
Instructions
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a deep skillet or pan over medium heat until the oil shimmers, about 1 minute.
Add the diced onion (about 1 cup), bell pepper (about 1 cup), and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables become tender and the onion is transparent, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the frozen veggie meat crumbles (16 ounces) to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon.
In a bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce (15 ounces), soy sauce (or vegan Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons), brown sugar (1 tablespoon), Dijon mustard (1 tablespoon), chili powder (1 teaspoon), smoked paprika (1/2 teaspoon), salt, and pepper to taste.
Pour the sauce mixture into the sauté pan with the meat crumbles. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the sauce thickens, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Toast the hamburger buns. Divide the sloppy joe mixture among the buns and serve hot with your favorite side.
Notes
Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Freeze for longer storage.
Reheating: Reheat gently in a saucepan over low heat or in the microwave, adding a splash of water if needed to loosen the sauce.
