2ouncesginger ale (for a sweeter drink use Sprite)
1ouncegin
Instructions
Blueberry Simple Syrup
Place the blueberries, water, and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a soft boil. Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for 7 -10 minutes. Use a fork or potato masher to break the blueberries and squeeze out the juice. Pour through a meshstrainer, and the bottom half will be your blueberry simple syrup. Cool the simple syrup in the refrigerator before adding it to your blueberry cocktail.
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water
Ombre Blueberry Gin Cocktail
Pour the blueberrysyrup in at the bottom of a cocktail or gin glass. Fill the glass with ice. To achieve the layered look, hold a spoon to the ice and slowly pour the gingerale on top of the spoon. Repeat with the gin. Garnish with fresh berries, mint sprig, and lemon peel twist. Serve with a cocktail straw or berries on a toothpick for the receiver to combine the ingredients together.
The ombre cocktail, also known as a layered cocktail or floating a drink, is so easy! There are just a few trade tricks, and I will teach you those now.
First, know the weight, or gravity, of each item. The heaviest liquid must be on the bottom. For this drink, the simple blueberry syrup was the heaviest and therefore placed at the bottom of the glass. Next was ginger ale, followed by gin.
All liquids need to be cold. Think of it this way; cold liquids want to keep to themselves. For this drink, the simple blueberry syrup, ginger ale, and gin were all placed in the refrigerator the night before. That might be a little overkill on my part. As long as they are cold, you can create a layered cocktail.
Place the spoon as low as possible into the drink. The spoon helps slow the force of liquid entering the drink while sumptuously spreading the liquid.
Hold the can/bottle as close to the spoon. This also lowers the force of the liquid is introduced, which helps to create the layers.
There you have it! Four easy steps to creating a layered cocktail and achieving a perfect ombre.
